Heavy-Duty Corrugated Boxes or Wooden Crates: What Should an Equipment Exporter Compare?

Choosing between a heavy-duty corrugated package and a wooden crate starts with the equipment and its journey, not a universal weight cut-off. A useful comparison describes the complete package: what supports the equipment, what prevents unwanted movement, what protects sensitive surfaces and how the packed unit will be handled. Neither material name is a substitute for evidence that the proposed configuration suits the shipment.

The wooden-crate option is a comparison reference; this article does not offer a wood-packaging supply service. Confirm the actual scope of any supplier proposal separately.

Define the same job before comparing options

Prepare one brief for both proposals. Record equipment dimensions and shipment mass, the documented transport configuration, permissible support and restraint interfaces, destination, handling stages and storage conditions. Mark missing information rather than treating it as unrestricted design freedom.

Ask each proposal to identify which parts perform each function. For example, is the outer enclosure intended to carry stacking loads, or is another structure responsible? This is a question for the designer to resolve, not permission to attach restraints to any convenient surface.

ISTA's design and testing guidance discusses product vulnerabilities and the distribution environment when selecting tests. It does not choose a material for this shipment.

Use a comparison record without assigning a winner

The fields below are editorial discussion prompts, not completed proposal data or an official test checklist.

Comparison item Common basis to record for each proposal
Product and configuration The same equipment, accessories, restrictions and document revisions
Package functions The proposed support, restraint, enclosure and surface-protection functions
Journey and handling The same route, transfers, storage and receiving assumptions
Evidence and acceptance Configuration covered, assessment method, conditions and agreed criteria
Cost scope Included items, packing work, shipment assumptions, handling and disposal scope
Unknowns and changes Information owner, missing evidence and changes needing review

No figures or performance rankings are assigned in this record. If the proposals use different shipment or acceptance assumptions, identify those differences before interpreting a price or test comparison.

Request evidence at the right level

Material tests and complete-package tests answer different questions. FEFCO lists board tests such as edgewise crush and water absorption separately from packaging tests such as compression, drop and vibration. A board test result should therefore not be presented as a complete shipment validation. FEFCO testing methods

For each option, request the configuration covered by the evidence, its limitations and the acceptance criteria. If these are unavailable, label the proposal as requiring validation rather than approved for export. Test selection and the applicable current procedure need competent project-specific review; this article supplies no test settings or capacities.

Compare cost without inventing savings

Use an identical scope: package supply, packing work, shipment dimensions, handling requirements and disposal arrangements. Keep documented costs separate from assumptions about damage, reuse or labour savings. Do not assign a savings percentage before comparable inputs exist.

Check destination requirements separately

The IPPC's ISPM 15 publication description concerns phytosanitary measures for raw-wood packaging. It is not a structural-performance standard. Identify the actual materials and destination requirements for any proposal; this article does not establish a particular shipment's regulatory compliance or import clearance. Do not treat a material label or a comparison table as that confirmation.

FAQ

Is a wooden crate automatically the safer option?

The material name alone does not establish suitability. Ask for the intended configuration and the evidence covering its use. No material winner is selected here.

Does “heavy-duty” state a verified capacity?

Not by itself. Request the actual specification, conditions and validation relevant to the proposed package. This article supplies no universal weight threshold or load rating.

Can this article be used to choose restraints or lifting points?

No. Those decisions require equipment-specific information and competent technical review. A proposal comparison does not authorize handling operations.
